In that case I totally don't understand the previous question. :-)

Serial cables are a lot harder to get by and connect to modern computers
than usb cables.  Also, the device can boot over usb, which means it is
always possible to recover over usb, even with a fully broken flash
image (including a broken u-boot).  IMO using the usb cable when
possible is the best option.  Serial can be nice for debugging output,
but not for booting.

Maybe, but I want to press one key on my development machine to make it
build a new image and instantly test it on the Ben without needing to
press buttons or change cables.  This is easy with usb-boot, if the
switch is closed; I think it's not so easy (but it should be possible)
with serial communication.
