I guess you are use the old u-boot.
the old u-boot will load kernel in nand.

the new u-boot will load kernel in sd card partition 1.
this partition must vfat and kenrel name must name "uImage"

in openwrt-xburst.git. there is one options to build the squashfs rootfs.
