If you look inside, it's actually not all that much. But yes, a
slightly wider display would fit.

A viable compromise between resolution, size, and cost might be a
WQVGA with a resolution of 400x240 pixels and about the same height
as the existing display. If you can find one where the cable comes
out on the long side, one may even be able to avoid the display
PCB, which would help with several other problems, too. (Balance,
total cost, etc.)
