Correct. So how would this constrain the throughput in a way that
could be undone by higher layers ? Do you have any specific
examples for "bad" and "good" higher layers in mind ?

I listed the signal strenght of the strongest station in each
channel (as reported by my wireless router).

I also did some scans of the RSSI my AT86RF230 prototypes actually

I think I posted this link before. The "mountain" was locally
generated WLAN traffic, to verify that the receiver really did
receive something. That circuit still has a number of RF side bugs,
so the absolute RSSI values the transceiver reports don't mean much.
