Sorry, I'm going to follow up my own post, with a cleaner solution.  The 
generic way to screen blank on the Nanonote/OpenWRT seems to be

Display off
echo 1 >/sys/class/graphics/fb0/blank
Display on
echo 0 >/sys/class/graphics/fb0/blank
