 Because as of right now, the hardware is 100% copyleft. Adding a non-copyleft component (like the Atheros chip) reduces that percentage, which means we aren't "driving toward the long term goal". We'd be driving in the opposite direction.

The long-term solution here is to locate a 100% copyleft solution for wifi. I'm not sure how possible this is.
